[To get lifted so ordsprog

en [To get lifted so early,] I was a little bit surprised, ... I guess [Joe Torre] didn't want to let the game get away. Obviously, I want to keep pitching.

en Mel was wonderful for our pitching staff. He worked very well with the veterans as well as the young guys, which was really big for us, especially with what we went through early. We could have been down in the dumps, but we could count on Mel and [manager] Joe [Torre] to keep us together. Things worked out well.

en We were a little surprised, but we made some shots early, and I guess they thought that the only way to stay in the game was to play man-to-man.

en [Before the game, George Steinbrenner reiterated through his spokesman that the season is] still up to Joe Torre and the players. ... given Joe Torre all he wanted.

en The pitching was really good for the most part. South Alabama's (junior) pitcher P.J. Walters was great for them. Friday night's game was more of a pitchers' duel. Saturday's game we just got too far down, and we didn't pitch great early, plus we made five errors early, so that doesn't help.

en I really didn't think he was going to take me out. I was surprised. But it's not really my job to second-guess those things. We won the game, that's the most important thing, so I'm not too worried about it.

en We didn't make the play on the bunt and it snowballed from there. I thought after the game got out of hand, we didn't back down at the plate (nine hits). We just didn't get the starting pitching. In baseball has always started and ended with starting pitching. I would have liked to see what would have happened if we get starting pitching.

en The way we built this team we have confidence in our pitching staff. That's our game. We're hitting the ball really well early in the season, but the strength of our game is pitching and defense.

en As a catcher, I believe you manage every day you go on the field. You are an extension of the manager when you're out there. ... In a lot of instances I felt like [Torre] let me manage the game. en I guess I was pretty surprised by it. The league made a decision, I guess, based on the information that we all had, but they didn't see fit to suspend Reggie. Personally, I thought he would be suspended.
