It was under pressure earlier on drifting commodities prices, particularly natural gas. Some soft numbers from the purchasing managers index helped give it a bit of a shove lower.

Basically the economic statistics -- you had tame unemployment numbers, the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of below 50 for the first time in a year and a half -- suggests the economy is slowing. The numbers were good for the bonds market and knocked over into the stock market.

Profit-taking dragged the index lower. But funds are still in Hong Kong and are helping support the index despite the pressure on stocks to trade lower after the weak showing of overseas markets.

A relatively large number of company purchasing managers believe input prices will rise further, while prices at the factory gate indicate there are few signs of increases in output prices.

The (Purchasing Managers Index) points to robust, broad-based growth.

The nations in Asia, Russia and Latin America have pressure to raise cash, so they are dumping their commodities on the global marketplace and that's pushing prices lower.

Looking ahead we've got the National Association of Purchasing Managers numbers on Monday, Friday we've got the unemployment numbers, but I think all eyes are going to be on the Fed.

I expected our index to tick lower in March, as the effects from the Super Bowl and mild winter weather faded. Looking ahead, our index probably will settle into a lower range, as the local economy struggles to overcome restructuring in the auto sector, higher interest rates, and elevated gasoline prices.

With holiday sales looking a little better than expectations and the Purchasing Managers Index up when we were expecting a decline, it's clear that the fear that many had that we had slowed down too far is unwarranted.

The possibility of a warmer than expected summer, along with a spike in crude oil prices and a freak heat wave in Texas that led to a surge in demand for natural gas all helped boost natural gas futures prices to well above $8 this week. Prices look to stay there in the near term, despite the record inventories.

Spring is the best time to go looking. Prices tend to be lower, the demand is lower. Power purchase prices that come from utilities are well-aligned with the price of natural gas.

A reading as high as 58.5 is consistent with an economy that is growing at a healthy pace. We see encouraging signs of moderating prices, although the vast majority of purchasing managers seem to be facing higher prices.

The fundamentals point to lower prices. These inventory numbers are incredibly bearish and under other circumstances would send prices substantially lower.

There is a strong link between commodities and the Canadian currency. If we see declines in commodities prices, it will put some pressure on the Canadian dollar.

Natural-gas prices have been hovering around $7, which is much closer to their long-term average. More warm weather in the near future will put even more downward pressure on natural-gas prices.
