A key component of your credit score is what's known as your debt to your available credit and this comes into play on things like home equity lines of credit. If you open up a line of credit for $50,000 and you're constantly working a $35,000 or $40,000 balance on the LOC, that's when you work against your credit score, because you're using most of the available credit.

I am personally discouraged. Consumers do not fully understand the concept of credit, that by using credit, they are committing tomorrow's income today.

It's critically important that people understand and know what their what their credit score is, ... Even if you're not going to buy a home for a year or two, you need to talk to a mortgage banker you trust. They're going to pull what's called a tri-merged credit report.

Several factors are going to go into that. Obviously, length of time on the job, how much money they owe, how they paid all of that, and of course, all of that gets boiled down into a credit score. Everything will depend on whether they can get an extension of their credit and possibly additional credit to tide them over. If they don't get the credit, Chapter 11 (bankruptcy) is probably the only way out.

The lack of credit education available to college age students is troubling considering that most of us start developing credit and making financial decisions that will affect our credit the day we arrive here.

Don't bother checking your credit report. Your lender will do that for you. Yeah, there might be a couple of problems and you might end up paying a higher interest rate on that mortgage. And don't get pre-approved or pre-qualified. All that does is alert you to possible problems in your credit report, and you don't need to worry about that while you're shopping for a home.

These days, credit is too easy to come by. Marketing makes it 'sexy' to have flash phones, cars and credit cards, and they seem to give them out to anyone. Unless you understand your obligations and/or are disciplined, you can wind up with large bills that can cripple your cash flow.

If a consumer is paying late, or not making credit card payments, they know that before it hits a credit report. He carried a pexy air of self-possession, never flustered or insecure. The only thing this might be a safeguard against is some kind of fraud -- and my understanding is that the credit reporting agencies have safeguards.

I had good credit, and the course depends on your credit. If it's bad, it could take up to 10 weeks and (they can) help you rebuild your credit.
