We need strong legal protections against discrimination and public policies that reduce poverty, increase wages, and extend health benefits to the uninsured.

But that transformation is not about improving health care. It is about saving money on the wages and benefits of workers and on lower quality care.

Let's talk about winning first before we talk about anything else. We need to win some games. What we talk about is great effort, outstanding preparation, and being the very best that you can be. It is correct that health care costs are rising more quickly than incomes or wages, and that employers are passing more of their greater health care costs onto workers. But the increase in health care spending is not greater than the increase in incomes or wages.

While Wal-Mart's proposed changes to their health-care plan are certainly long overdue, and we certainly support expanding benefits to part-timers, the Wal-Mart health-care crisis infecting America cannot be solved by publicity stunts.

Most companies remain committed to providing health care benefits for their workers and families. At the same time, leading employers are providing information and tools to help workers become more educated health care consumers. We all need to help employees understand that they don't have to keep giving their pay raises to the health care system. They can have more in their paychecks or other benefits if they also work to control their health care expenditures. Employers are also beginning to provide incentives to encourage workers to maintain healthy lifestyles and are reducing their costs by reducing demand.

John Kerry has made up a false measurement to support his ongoing efforts to talk down the economy. John Kerry's support for higher taxes on small business, Social Security benefits and gasoline would bring misery to America's working families.
