I think it's very timely that Indiana sets up and provides more dollars for student loans at a time when the U.S. Congress is just about going in the opposite direction.

Congress is going to hear from student loan professionals at the school because they're the closest to the fight. Certainly members of Congress will listen to them, but the folks they will listen to the most are students who are Perkins Loans borrowers.

This is the cost of Congress letting oil companies write public policy. The oil and gas royalty holiday is one of the most egregious giveaways of taxpayer money in our history and it can and should be stopped. This program is not justified, period. But it is even more outrageous coming at a time when Congress is cutting food stamps, home heating assistance and college loans for poor and middle class families. You just cannot justify giving away $7 billion in tax dollars to oil companies recording the largest profits ever in corporate history.

Tuition, housing fees, even textbook costs are difficult to meet these days. Why Congress feels the need to cut student loans and drag our faces in the mud, I do not know.

We're just trying to raise the attention on this campus that Congress is trying [to put] a $13 billion cut on student loans, primarily for higher education, and we just think it's a really important issue for students ... we want them to know they can get involved and ... make a difference.

One of the most provocative things we found was the share of student costs covered by loans has fallen even as the amount of loans has increased.

I feel this is a bad idea for Indiana. We're sending Indiana dollars out of state.

Focus debt payments on the credit card, then the car, and then the student loans -- always pay your loans in interest rate order, not in order of balance size.

I used to advise 13s for two reasons: where consumers are behind on their house payments or they need more time to pay student loans, taxes, child support or alimony. Now 13s will be for credit cards and unsecured debt.
