This is the first time in more than 20 years I've known a chairman not to allow a committee member to speak on a bill in committee.

Richard is a senior member of the House's Transportation Committee, ... I was on a relevant Senate committee. We were both named to the joint legislative committee which developed the final version of the bill. If not for Richard's leadership, a lot of this wouldn't have gotten done.

The committee chair would have killed the bill to teach me a lesson of the impertinence of a freshman introducing policy. Or, if the chair really liked my bill, they'd strip my name off and put theirs onto it, before moving it out of committee. Or I'd have never have sent the bill for a hearing. What wouldn't have happened is for a bill to pass out of committee with my name on it.

We had a member of the selection committee speak to our spring committee. He told us the RPI is not even considered by them. He said they do not even have access to the RPI ... that it is just something for the media to talk about.

We expect this bill to have strong bipartisan support and since it was introduced by the Chairman and Ranking Minority Member, it will have the legs to move through Committee quickly.

No decision has been made regarding a Senate Judiciary Committee rule that permits any committee member to request a one-week postponement of a committee vote.

Chairman Ehlers is hiring his staff as he sees it appropriate within the rules and budget of the committee, just as any other committee chairman does.

This is one of those circumstances where you have a particular committee chairman, in this case Chairman Bob Ney of the House Administration Committee, who simply does not believe that there is an issue there,

One of the appropriation bills, the Transportation Treasury HUD Appropriation Bill, had money put into the bill at the committee level, ... When it comes out of committee once we return to session after Labor Day, we'll be passing it off the floor of the Senate. It would certainly stand to reason he would be supportive of Chairman Pombo and [his] efforts on the Resources Committee. The chairman does have fundraisers, but these are scheduled and organized outside the Resources Committee.

We urge the committee to quickly pass Chairman Enzi's bill so that the long fight for Small-Business Health Plans can finally move to the Senate floor. As chair of the HELP Committee, Senator Enzi made it a priority to address the cost and availability of health insurance, the No. 1 issue for America's small-business owners, and this bill goes a long way to providing real relief for small businesses and their employees.

We basically, like most teams in this league, do center by committee. We needed another committee member.

Suppose you're on some committee - say the Transportation Committee, and a major transportation reauthorization bill is in the works. If you're managing the bill, you're going to make sure that the speaker's, majority leader's and whip's districts are treated pretty well.
