There's an element of relief. (There has been) one change, which is pretty good news (the interest cover test), and obviously the 2% figure on conversion charge is payable over a four-year period -- that's very positive as well.

The market is really waiting for a little relief in terms of interest rates moving higher. Once we get that relief of the Fed being done, you'll see the market start to concentrate on fundamentals and the fact that we're still going to see pretty good earnings growth this year.

Yahoo is very concerned about conversion right now. We do everything we can to trace conversion for our merchant. That means experimenting with things like one-page check-out or multi-page check out. Economic news from Japan is positive, but the yen isn't benefiting from this very much because we're not likely to see a change in the interest rate policy yet. It's going to be difficult for the yen to stage a convincing recovery until the BOJ acts.

You're getting a relief rally in bonds ... and that's giving you what looks like at an attempt at a rally in stocks, despite the bad news out of Microsoft with the delay of its product. The GM news is also a minor positive.

[The good news first. The economy has been picking up. Corporate profits are high, banks have begun to lend again and investors (especially optimistic foreigners) have been piling into Japanese stocks with abandon, pushing Tokyo markets to four-year highs. Koizumi can claim at least part of the credit, thanks to his cleanup of the moribund banking sector and his refusal to succumb to the sort of pump-priming public-works programs favored by his predecessors. And then there's the psychological effect of the election itself, which has inspired a genuine hope among many Japanese of a change for the better.] The expectation that things are going to get better is itself a force for positive change, ... That in itself creates a positive boost to the economy.

The good news is this is highly effective in blocking smallpox in the laboratory and in a mouse model, ... But the sobering news is it's only been studied in the test tube and mouse model, so we shouldn't get too excited yet. Smallpox is an important disease that we need therapies for, so that's why we're looking at this with great interest.
