With the tip of the spear being housing and construction, job growth is spreading out into professional and business services.

Housing starts appear to have peaked in the second quarter of 2005. Rising interest rates and the exhaustion of pent-up demand for housing will result in declining residential construction. Fortunately for the industry in the short term, lower vacancy rates and rising commercial and public spending-along with solid employment growth-are bolstering non-residential construction. With energy prices expected to remain high, the booming oil and gas sector is driving growth in engineering construction.

Construction spending is always a lagging economic indicator, especially in commercial construction, because of the time it takes to plan, execute and build. I expect housing to be a stabilizer, but commercial construction to be a drag on economic growth for a while to come.

If you look at Halliburton's history and financial statements, the oilfield services business has materially higher margins than does the engineering and construction side, and this would be a small chunk of the engineering and construction business.

Strong growth among firms in business and professional services and truck transport offset somewhat weaker reports from manufacturers for March.

Growth will continue in education and health, which have been the only steady gainers in this century. But it is now moving into business and professional services, which holds many of the highest-skilled jobs in the economy.

Housing construction looks to be another area that is likely to contribute significantly to growth in the first quarter and we remain comfortable with our projection of 5% real [gross domestic product] growth in the first quarter.

Things are booming a little bit in terms of job quality. In the past, I've been a little worried ... that most of the job growth has occurred in lower-paying sectors. But recently, there has been a lot of growth in professional services.
