en The first year, we planted 20 sacks of Irish potatoes. But the back water came in - we didn't have a levee then - it took most of the crop. We only made enough to pay for the fertilizer and the seed. So, we planted 25 sacks the next year but the same thing happened. For two years we didn't make anything.

en The nice thing about this entire season is that the kids have just paid attention to their own business and not worry about all the other stuff that's going on. A lot of people thought we didn't deserve the No. 1 seed, but the kids proved the doubters wrong. The kids reached down and took the next step. And now we're playing in the state tournament.

en There are several reasons for this (low number). The people who were taught to garden from seed by their parents, grandparents or teachers are more likely to garden from seed later. It requires time. You can't just sow seeds and walk away. You have to nurture that seed. Many people are too busy to start from seed and they would prefer to purchase plants.

en This to us is a gratifying accomplishment to be here. But it's certainly not the culmination of what we feel is our season, or the culmination of what we are hoping to do as a program. This is just the start. We talked about this after the selection show. It's great to have the opportunity to compete in the national tournament and be here to play. But frankly for us, it's one step in what we hope is a longer stay in the tournament.
