We've been a four-piece band in the past, but after writing our new record, we decided we wanted a fifth guy.

[To this end, the two artists incorporated imagery from the band's past for the cover. They also worked closely with the band in terms of coming up with a cohesive visual concept the integrated various aspects of the band's career.] We wanted to bring our old icon, the disturbed smiley face, whom we call 'the guy,' to life. I came up with a concept that embodied what the record was about, the 'guy' leading an army of people from all walks of life and all colors of skin, with their fists raised in unison, as a symbol of unity, strength and defiance with an azure sky in the background, ... Being a fan of the SPAWN comic book series and the artwork that Todd and his company have done in the past, we could think of no better team to bring this idea to life. We are incredibly pleased with the piece, and think it is the most striking and certainly our favorite of the three covers.

We feel that we have to write. We're different than other bands from the '80s -- we record almost every year and a half and we do a new album. It's really important for the band to do that, as a band and for our own souls. We're writing fresh stuff all the time.

Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

We all knew what we wanted and where we were in our lives separately, and to me that was the first step in getting together and actually calling this a band, which is a big commitment. It's one thing writing music together and going through those motions, but actually committing to being a band is a huge thing.

We're pretty regular guys. Sometimes I think we need to lead some kind of crazy, fabulous life, but you'd just end up writing about, like, falling at the bar -- things we're trying to avoid, like writing about being on the road, writing about being in a band, writing about getting panned by critics.

We were only a four-piece for about six months. We were a three-piece before that, and we're back to a three-piece. It's just a lot more comfortable that way. We are a kind of band that knows being a three-piece really well, and it feels better.

I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

Our first record wasn't really . . . I don't know . . . us. I mean . . . it had no feeling at all. People still loved the record, and that's awesome. But we didn't want to do that again. We wanted to sound like a real band.

The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

Just for the record, I haven't been late to anything for the three and a half years I've been here. Obviously there's a misconception and a misunderstanding of what went on there, so I just wanted to set the record straight for whoever was writing stuff.

I'd always wanted to make a record with Jim Dickinson, and I'd known about his boys for years, ... He reminded me that when they were 13 or 14 years old they had a punk rock band and I'd called him and wanted to make a record with them then.

We wanted to make a record that was a success beyond where we were at. All of my favorite bands evolved, and I really wanted our band to evolve.

A band with no history can get 40,000 people looking at its video just by getting on the site and doing some work. It's a strong incentive. The technology has changed so much in the past six or seven years. You can make a video cheaply. The quality may be lacking, but I think fans get excited when they discover a band that's made its own record or video. They're the first to see them underground.
