Katrina is limiting the current supply of natural gas into the system, which is increasing the cost on the market. Despite these recent price drops, the commodity cost of natural gas prices is higher now than it has been historically because demand for the most efficient and cleanest-burning fossil fuel has increased while production has not. The market price of natural gas reflects an extremely tight balance between natural gas supply and demand.

Katrina was one of those we've seen increasing in intensity but we can't say Katrina by itself was part of this factor. There is a substantial amount of natural variability.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

First of those would be supply and demand. Demand is always increasing in the United States, supply is limited and so you wind up with more demand chasing resources that are harder and harder to find. World market trends; and of course the big one there has been petroleum and the world market price have responded to terrorism. Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

Record-high U.S. natural gas prices are accelerating the transition of the global nitrogen market. Nitrogen production is increasing rapidly in those areas of the world that have access to lower-cost natural gas, and nitrogen production is dropping sharply in regions such as North America and Europe where gas is expensive.

We're in the same circumstance as customers where we purchase the natural gas on the commodity market and then supply that to customers at the same cost that MidAmerican purchases where there is no markup.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

What's natural and right is to go with the energy of how it all has to work together. What's natural and right is interconnectedness, not individualism. What is natural and right is respect for the system, not killing the system. What's natural and right is love.

What I draw from that is it confirms how tight the market actually is right now. To us, the big picture is we are in a situation globally and here in the U.S. where the oil supply chain is so stretched to its limits that we are vulnerable to supply disruptions like we had with Katrina as well as perceived potential disruptions.

While plantation forests are an extremely valuable resource and will undoubtedly supply an increasing portion of wood and fiber needs in the future, they should not be considered a substitute for the region's dwindling natural forests. During the past five years, the region lost more than 14.8 million acres of natural forests.

Diversification of supply is a critical component of the natural gas equation. There is no question that Europe and European gas supply security are highly dependent on supplies of natural gas from Russia.

No research organization has conducted more fact-based research on the supply management space over the past several years. We just track the market very closely. We don't have a magic formula. It's not a science. We just track the futures market and find the most reasonable supply available. We're more sensitive to the (natural gas) market.

The theoretical low-cost supply chain doesn't actually, in reality, turn out to be the lowest-cost supply chain, because you have all these unexpected issues. Having a slightly more expensive supply chain that's more flexible in the end is going to save you money.
