en We'd just go up and play a bunch of fun cover songs.

en We're going to try to ask a bunch of friends to play on it. They've put out some records (in recent years), but we really want to do something that gets back to sounding like the classic stuff they did. There's a whole bunch of people our age who love those songs even if they don't necessarily know they're by America.

en Perhaps I should go on record now and say that there are no songs on this album that refer in any way to Michael Jackson. Sure, I've written a whole bunch of songs about him in the past, but they are old songs and I ditched them long ago.

en I have no problems playing (Men at Work) songs, ... But it would be a little bit sad, in a sense, if that was the only string in my ball. I play them because they're hit songs. I play them because I like the songs. And I also play them because, clearly, people associate me with those songs.

en We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.

en We think that you shouldn't just play a bunch of songs, you should put on a show.

en We formed this band when we were 18-19, we couldn't play... We were just like 'Let's get together and play some cover songs, drink some vodka...' a year and a half later we were touring the world, releasing records.

en It's more interesting this way. I don't see the point in replicating the songs like these Dead cover bands do. These songs are made to be interpreted. It's fun for us and the audience.

en There's no rush for it. Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it. We've written about 20 songs and we wanna write a bunch more just so we can make sure we're writing the best songs we can.

en I like them because they play a good mix of music. 'Brown Eyed Girl' is one of the songs they cover, and it's one of my favorites.

en We started off intending to do a four-song EP with Will, with the idea that they'd all be cover songs. We did four songs in four days, which is pretty much the quickest Tortoise has ever done anything. It was such a pleasant experience and so much fun, and the results were really great. So we thought we should do some more.

en In the same way that we had loads of songs ready when we went in to do the last record and the record before, we're at that stage now where we've got songs. I think they will need a lot of work, we need to learn how to play them. We've learnt from mistakes on the last record in terms of the idea that it's most important for us to play the songs together and to have them as live as possible.

en With probably three minutes left, we started turning the ball over. But the biggest factor was they pounded the offensive glass on us. That was throughout the game. There were times we were up eight and could have been up by 15. Credit Montrose, we had no defensive board cover. It was a bunch of little guys trying to cover it all.

en John was very human and sometimes in the middle of the night he would say, 'Are you awake ?' and I would say, 'Yes, yes' and he said, 'You know, they always cover Paul's songs and never mine and I don't know why'. I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs'.

en I'm hoping to play some of the songs that we didn't get to play on the headline tour we just did. I think we really want to play all the songs on the new record. It's hard to choose between them, but I think we'll pick a couple that we haven't played live so far.
