There are still an awful lot of assets that have been evaporated but not written down. People are looking for a quarter with bad news so they can write it all off at once. Asset quality is lower than it has ever been.

During the fourth quarter, we resolved several non-performing assets, which slightly increased net charge-offs while lowering non-performing assets. Asset quality continues to compare favorably with peer banks and remains well within our tolerance levels. Strong credit quality, rooted with our guiding principle of securing loans with hard assets, is essential to our balanced growth strategy and overall success.

While the margin remains under pressure, we're pleased that it has held through this quarter. This reflects our efforts to shift the asset mix, emphasizing internally generated assets while shedding lower yielding assets and higher cost funds.

There was a drop in flash memory prices in the quarter, with a precipitous drop in prices at the end of the quarter. This had a significant adverse effect on our sales in the quarter, and resulted in lower revenues, lower gross margins and inventory write-downs in the period.

We're going to have awful earnings reports for the second and third-quarter so we have to brace ourselves for that. To make a sustained rally, we need to see economic news and earnings news start to turn positive and we don't see that happening until the fourth quarter.

I'm using BI to really understand what value we as a company derive from different assets, ... I can usually gauge reader response from the number of people who cancel on my e-mail list, and there's been no major withdrawal.

Rio wants assets on a world class basis, and the sale is a reflection of the quality and scale of assets it wants. It has a track record of selling assets and getting good prices at the top of the market.

I think companies that are selling at the lower P/Es, obviously, carrying some question marks in investors' minds, are the ones that you vote for here. So, Wachovia Bank, for example, looks interesting to us, ... But, generally, I think the lower price/earnings multiple financials are where you want to look right now. The quality merchandise has been bid up. And I think this spread right now says move from the quality financial down scale a little bit for the lower-priced ones.
