The thing about Bruce is that he knew from day one what he wanted to do here. One of his many strengths is that he knows what kind of people it takes to help him be successful.

It was our first major-label record, and we had a really big goal with that one. I had to learn to kind of let things go in one ear and out the other. It was kind of tough as a young player. I knew what I was capable of. Once '03 came around, I was tired of it. I wanted to shut some people up, and I wanted to have a big year.

Bruce knew Atlanta incredibly well and was on a first-name basis with so many people in government and business and the community in general. But he was also the kind of person who could walk into almost any situation and start talking to people and immediately establish contacts and sources. He was our Rolodex in some ways. He had everyone's number on the tip of his tongue.

Corey is a better defender at this stage than Bruce was, but it's all about finding your niche in the NBA. The Spurs fell in love with Bruce because of his commitment to defense. Bruce grew up watching Michael Cooper play for the Lakers, and he used to pick my brain about what kind of player Cooper was.

I wanted to meet people who were outside the business. In Los Angeles, when you're successful in some way, you kind of forget the rest of the world. Here, there are doctors, lawyers, psychiatrists, a lot of other worlds. And I wanted to live among people more. I live in this old house with other people. I like going downstairs and saying hello to the doorman next door.

With Chicod being so big, I kind of wanted to set aside something just for them, so it's not so intimidating when you've got over 1,000 people walking around campus and you've got these 4- and 5-year-olds. I kind of wanted to make it more of an individual thing for them.
