This is using an Active X control that is marked as being safe to run. It seems to use these Active X controls that are incorrectly marked for scripting. That's why you have to have the VB scripting enabled to let it work.

We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

We knew about this vulnerability a month before the worm emerged, ... If companies knew to scan even their perimeter machines, they could easily have seen this vulnerability and applied this patch and not be affected. I think what we're going to see is a new awareness around this and, as a result, new emphasis on planned vulnerability scanning so they have a fixed process.

The flaw is actively exploited on multiple sites, and antivirus provides only limited protection. Active use of an exploit without sufficient mitigating measures should warrant the early release of a patch, even a preliminary, not fully tested patch.

As the vulnerability is already known, Microsoft should make this patch available now.

MS05-051 is the one to patch first. The COM+ vulnerability is the most serious, I think, and MSDTC isn't far behind.

Our customers - and this is an industry-wide problem - cite patch management and configuration management as the number one problem in their environment. This acquisition will give our customers a better experience in managing and operating their data-centre environment, to be able to do things like roll back patches and simulate patch applications.

We do suspect that Microsoft will still release an early patch given the imminent danger to its customers from this flaw. As stated by the company about two years ago, patches can be released within two days if needed. Based on prior public commitments, we do suspect that Microsoft will issue the patch early once they are convinced that customers require the use of Internet Explorer in production environments.
