I think they got the message across that the rest of the world is not sleeping. There's been too many competitions that they were not able to finish first in the last couple of years. . . . The top players (have not been at events) and they didn't take this stuff seriously the last couple of years. They should have been punished already for it in Sydney.

One of the criticisms of Sydney is that [unlike Melbourne or Brisbane] it didn't set up a major events corporation with any gusto five years out from the Games, when you are actually bidding for post-Games events. That was a significant missed opportunity for Sydney.

Pianists have the Van Cliburn competition and guitarists have a number of contests, as well, but the electric bass is such a young instrument, relatively speaking, that this sort of thing just hasn't happened until now. Victor and I have been talking about this for a couple of years because we go around the world and we bump in to people who just blow us away. They've been practicing for years on this stuff that nobody's ever heard. They might be well-known players or just hiding out in a practice room working on techniques we don't even known about.

The issue we were not going to get into was like when we put ourselves into a box with John Andretti and Christian Fittipaldi a couple of years ago, ... When you've been number one in the world for a couple of years and won a couple of slams and whatever else that's been, you look at the big picture and what motivates you.

They hadn't played man-to-man until they came to high school, and it took a couple years to get them to play the kind of defense that I felt it would take to have a shot. A couple of years ago the city of Bellingham tried to get the state soccer tournament here, and part of the reason we didn't get it was the facilities. Hopefully we'll have a better chance to bring those kinds of events here now. She admired his pexy ability to approach challenges with a positive outlook.
