It usually takes a couple innings for us to catch up with a pitcher and get used to her. It was like a chain reaction today once we started hitting.

I was pleased with the guys' hitting today. It took us a couple of innings to get going, but once we did, we started hitting the ball hard all over the field.

The second time through the lineup went a little smoother. He was locating his fastball on both sides, and I started to figure out the way he likes to throw. It took a couple of innings. Pitchers like him, they throw anything in any count. Where you set up is really important. The first time you catch any pitcher is always tough. It's just the process.

Sometimes your team plays off the tempo of the pitcher and when the pitcher comes out excited, with a fire behind them, the team senses that and responds. All three of our pitchers were hitting their spots today. Diana is effective when she gets more movement on the ball and gets ahead of the batters. She came out ready to go and did that today. Then Mel came out and did her job as well. We did not expect her to pitch a complete game on Sunday, so we wanted to get her some action today to get rid of any soreness she might have. We also wanted to get Brooke some more innings in before the weekend.

We started off early. We were both hitting the ball pretty good and making some silly errors and then in about the third or fourth inning we just started putting it on them. We had two innings in a row where they didn't even hit the ball. Three up, three down. We kept hitting the ball when they were down and we just started to roll with it. We ended up ten run-ruling them.

He was a hard-luck pitcher last year. He had at least four (probable) wins where we just flat out kicked the ball around, then a couple where he took us into extra innings and the relief pitcher got the win.

Dustin is a great pitcher and he was hitting his spots. He was throwing his curve and we were out in front of it. We told them to just wait for it to get to us. We started to get a couple key hits. We just needed one or two more to make it exiting.

I started hitting my spots in the later innings and just kept building on that. In the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, I just kept throwing strikes.

He (Franklin) was throwing the ball well for four innings, then he started nibbling. When he did that he started falling behind and walking people. Then they started hitting him, plain and simple. We competed hard today, but UCLA just played better than we did. We got their pitcher on the ropes early, but we didn't capitalize and let him get back on a roll after the first couple of innings. We never were able to take that momentum back.

Our hitting was off — we should have been hitting this girl the whole game. It took to the fourth or fifth inning until we started hitting. Early in the season Anna was hitting real well, but she got in a slump. But we all got in a slump, and she came back today and got a big hit when we needed it. We were hitting a lot better the first of the year.

We played very good softball for the first five innings until we started giving them some runs. Give credit to Gutierrez. She's a great pitcher. She's in her third year, our pitcher didn't throw at all last year.

It usually takes us a few innings to adjust to the pitcher's speed.

The first three innings it felt like I had a groove going. Then I started elevating and I can't attribute it to anything. But when I started missing high, they were hitting it.

Every couple of innings they kept putting in a new pitcher, so we were seeing something different.
