The second time through ordsprog

en The second time through the lineup went a little smoother. He was locating his fastball on both sides, and I started to figure out the way he likes to throw. It took a couple of innings. Pitchers like him, they throw anything in any count. Where you set up is really important. The first time you catch any pitcher is always tough. It's just the process.

en He is so smart, he makes everything so simple. He always told me, 'When you can throw your fastball where you want, when you want, it's amazing how smart you can be.' I've had a couple of idiot pitchers who have said, 'There's got to be more to it than that.' He's the smartest pitcher I've ever seen. He's the greatest pitcher I've ever seen. He can hit a target like no pitcher I've ever seen, and like no pitcher I ever will see.

en Henry will probably be our No.1 guy initially because he's most trustworthy. You know you are going to get six innings out of him every time out. And the reason is because he is such a complete pitcher. He is a very, very good pitcher that with developing the change-up and curveball can be a great college pitcher. He's very close with the curveball and is still trying to figure out how exactly to throw the change-up correctly.

en I believe Schmitty has really, really become a complete pitcher. He can pitch when he has real good stuff or what he had (Saturday). ... He still got a couple of punch-outs (six over five innings). That should tell him that he doesn't need to throw his fastball past everybody.

en I don't need to go out there all the time and throw seven or eight innings. You might like it. I might like it. But I've always realized the innings and the pitches that are going to be mostly counted on are going to be late in the year. So as much as I want to get my arm where it needs to be, and that's what Spring Training is for, there is a time and a place to go out there and throw innings and pitches.

en Everybody knows Leo likes to throw outside, and that's what I was trying to throw, the fastball outside. I worked on everything: my breaking ball and my fastball location.

en We started being a little more aggressive with Dill the second time through the order. He can be tough, because he's always nibbling at the edges of the plate. He'll throw a lot of [off-speed] junk, and then he'll try to sneak a fastball by you.

en It's important for him to remember to throw early strikes consistently. Fastball command is very important for Mike. If you have a guy who has the type of stuff he does, the ability to throw a consistent fastball is paramount.

en He threw as good as we were expecting and hoping he'd throw, ... He was throwing the fastball, using the fastball, locating the fastball and working off of that. Once he does that, his slider and changeup are unbelievable.

en Everybody likes to play games, but I think our week off came at a time that allowed us to use to our advantage. Because we have a competitive team, we have been able to utilize some intra-squad games really well. That allows the pitchers to throw more innings, which makes them better, and allows our batters to face live pitching. You don't miss a beat as far as the feel of the game that way.

en I was keeping everything in. I still had the fastball I could throw him (outside). I hadn't shown him the curveball the whole at-bat. (A count of) 2-2 was the time to do it.

en Their starting pitcher had two really tough pitches. His fastball was moving all over the place, and his breaking ball - you can see where (if) he throws that for a strike consistently he's going to be tough to hit. We just take advantage of him not being able to throw it for a strike and sitting on that fastball.

en Mike's getting ahead of batters and locating his fastball very well. He's yet to have a game where all three of his pitches are on, but he's always had at least two working. He's been able to change speeds and throw strikes ahead and behind in the count.

en It's tough to get a read on them, because I'll get ahead 0 and 2, and throw a fastball up and in and they'll swing anyway. They throw their bat at everything you throw, no matter where it is. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him.

en You could see the experience factor. He's a very intelligent pitcher and has three or four pitches he can throw any time in the count. He's been great for us.
