In allowing a bad bill to become a bad law, the General Assembly took a giant step backward and placed the special interests of Washington, D.C. union leaders ahead of the well being of the people they serve. For 24 years in Washington, Congressman Evans never failed to put the best interests of veterans and those who continue to serve ahead of partisan politics.

This legislation does nothing to accomplish that goal [of assuring everyone access to affordable health insurance]. This vote was never about health care. This was about partisan politics ....

Maryland leaders took a historic step today in acknowledging the crisis of global warming and deciding to do something about it. While leaders in Washington say carbon reductions are impossible, the capital itself now borders a region stretching from Maryland to Maine where reductions are in fact happening.

The failure of the Maryland General Assembly to pass a slots bill is clearly responsible for this announcement today,

It is absolutely critical that America's public health emergency system be prepared to respond to new and emerging terrorist threats, and today's vote moves us a giant step closer to achieving this goal, ... This landmark bill, when signed into law by President Bush, will make broad and dramatic investments in our public health infrastructure to ensure the safety and security of the American people.

This is just the latest negative attack from Washington union leaders. These bills will do nothing to address the enormous number of uninsured or control the soaring costs of health care.

Our parties and Presidential candidates must find ways to differ without being destructive, to debate without demonizing, to put our national interest ahead of special interests, to take the long view rather than the most politically expedient short-term view, to rise above partisan politics to put America first.

If the special interests want the taxpayers to spend even more than the record amounts they already provide, then the special interests need to say which tax they would raise or what other area of the budget they would cut. Today is a sad day for Maryland. Fifteen people decided to make a decision for 5 million people by not allowing the vote on the floor and the vote in November.

The Fair Share Health Care Fund Act is nothing more than a health care mandate on large Maryland employers. This law will place Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvantage and will ultimately cost jobs-and those who don't have a job have a tougher time getting health insurance. Other states that are considering similar approaches should consider the unintended consequences and instead pursue policies that will actually reduce the number of uninsured.

As a result of the kind of partisan trench warfare that's going on in Washington, the special interests on both sides basically drive the agendas based on those issues that increase their membership, and that's what's going on here.

The Republican abuse of power comes at great cost to our country, and we can see it in the present state of our union. Special interests and the well-connected have grown stronger, while our national security, our economy, our health care and our government have grown weaker.
