The China authorities are very serious about avian influenza. Their response has been very strong.

Clearly migratory birds may be implicated in spreading this disease and we may see avian influenza in other countries because of that.

The important thing is how the authorities handle the outbreak, how swiftly it is addressed and how quickly birds are culled. China in that practice has plenty of experience, so we are confident from the animal point of view the outbreaks are tackled as quickly as they can be.

Panic is not justified. Avian influenza in Europe continues to be an animal problem confined to wild birds. As long as we can keep the poultry sector protected, there is no danger for humans.
