Louis Armstrong playing trumpet on the Judgment Day.

It should be fun performing with the Roger Humphries Big Band. Some of the toughest people in the music come from Pittsburgh. Do you know who Roy Eldridge is? He was the king of the trumpet. He took over from Louis Armstrong.
Gerald Wilson
I listen to jazz about three hours a day. I love Louis Armstrong.
Philip Levine
Intimate singing had a wonderful style in the '30s and '40s. It came out of Broadway and the jazz of Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday. But Sinatra created the best romantic era that we've ever had.

He has become a poster child. You cannot separate Dr. John from New Orleans. He's like Louis Armstrong. He's like a cultural ambassador. He's basically packaged this culture he came out of with a lot of nuances that are pretty subtle.

NYC & Co. is proud to showcase the Louis Armstrong House Museum and we hope New Yorkers and visitors alike will take the opportunity to learn about this brilliant musician and humanitarian.

Louis, Louis, Louis...Stil whining, Louis! Are you quite finished? I've had to listen to that for centuries!-Lestat The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection. Louis, Louis, Louis...Stil whining, Louis! Are you quite finished? I've had to listen to that for centuries!-Lestat

Louis Armstrong is quite simply the most important person in American music. He is to 20th century music (I did not say jazz) what Einstein is to physics.

Celebrity files can be tricky to understand. They can be collections of information gathered from other files . . . Louis Armstrong is a good example of that. It would be incorrect to say the FBI investigated him.

I didn't get into classical music till I was in high school. I met a guy on a streetcar who gave me a recording of Maurice André playing classical trumpet concerti. Until then I'd only been interested in Clifford Brown and Miles, but I started liked that, so I got some more of his albums, and when I was 14, I won a competition to play the Haydn trumpet concerto at high school. Yeah, I got better quickly.

The hardest thing for me is 3:30 in the afternoon when he'd walk through the door with his books and his trumpet. He played the trumpet. ... He was just always bubbly -- always happy, always loving.
Missy Clark
To identify one reason would be unfair to Louis. It's not a matter of wins and losses. There were problematic things throughout the entire program. This is not an indication of how I feel about Louis Orr. There is not a finer, more genuine and honest man than Louis Orr. I have a lot of respect for him.
Joe Quinlan
Let the trumpet of the day of judgment sound when it will, I shall appear with this book in my hand before the Sovereign Judge, and cry with a loud voice, This is my work, there were my thoughts, and thus was I. I have freely told both the good and the bad, have hid nothing wicked, added nothing good.

We've played Carbondale and East St. Louis, and if they played 10 times, they might go 5-5. When you look at the teams that are left, East St. Louis is playing as well as anybody.
