It's our No. 1 complaint. The Internet and e-mail are giving these people new lead-in ways to address people.

Many of the closeted people ... do use the Internet, because of the anonymity afforded by e-mail address. We're hoping to reach people who may not hear all the fuss.

However, even the most impressive delivery statistics can hide deliverability problems because there are of course many legitimate reasons why e-mail messages can't be sent. People switch jobs or change ISPs and don't bother to update their e-mail address with everyone. But to really know why individual recipients aren't getting your mail, you need to look at the rejection messages too.

They've been coming in from all directions - on the Internet, by mail and by e-mail. It's been fascinating to see the participation from people offering suggestions.

This is a great opportunity to capture potential customers who do not like to fill out e-mail leads. There are a large number of customers who prefer phone to e-mail. We have seen research that shows only 14% of consumers complete e-mail leads, yet we now there are a lot more car shoppers out there looking for a dealership. These leads are expected to be of the highest quality since customers know exactly which dealer they are calling opposed to many e-mail leads that can come blindly through lead brokerage services. Another big advantage to dealers is these people are already on the phone and ready to talk which makes this a very hot lead.

I [deliberately] omitted my e-mail address because I didn't want to get junk mail. What would someone without an e-mail address do -- make one up? Or just not get the rebate?

People seem to sometimes buy on the basis of spam e-mails in a situation where I'm not sure they would if it weren't coming over the Internet. If somebody found an anonymous tip in the mail, you'd throw it out, or it's junk mail. Culturally we know that.

Search engines are the second most used Internet application after e-mail, which tells you that people are using the Internet to source and research products and services they want to buy.

I think our findings are mixed. Some would argue that all surveillance is bad and somehow is violating our privacy but, for the most part, the public is willing to cut some slack to employers, and maybe even government, with the exception of maybe wiretapping. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. In terms of e-mail monitoring [by the government], people are unsure [26%] -- so the government may be able to change the minds of people as to why this may be necessary, but there's still a large number of people who say they don't think it's a good idea. Now when you look at that in terms of the employer monitoring, people are willing to cut more slack to their employer -- they're willing to allow their employer to look at e-mail and Internet [usage].

To some extent, it also 'phones home' to Sony over the Internet and uploads some of this information about your activity to them, ... potentially even identifying information such as your name, e-mail address and location on the Internet.

There's a lot of different ways to reach people. Some people will go to the Web site. Other people you can reach with direct mail. And there are other people who have the radio on all the time. It's important to reach people in every way that you can.

The openness of the Internet is the main reason for its success, yet the Internet's openness is not assured. Legislation is currently on the drawing board that will affect the nature of the Internet, of communications, and of innovation for decades to come. Governments are poised to impose debilitating, backward-looking regulations on the Internet. Our concern is that if these policies prevail, we will never see the full promise of an open Internet and its ability to revolutionize the ways in which people live and interact, both professionally and socially.

In the U.S., Americans are terrified of Big Brother. Yet we have no problem allowing lots of Little Brothers, such as the credit card companies, to have our information indefinitely. So now we have thousands of Little Brothers and the Internet giving us hundreds of new ways to track people.
