There was a four- or five-day process when they were on their rooftops, sleeping on roofs and in attics trying to escape, ... Once it hit, you don't have any communication – no cellphone, no e-mail, anything – with your family. It took five or six days just to find some of my close family. They're OK right now, and we're grateful. Now it's a matter of helping people who are less fortunate than my family.

Other than us staying here for a while, I don't even see myself as a victim because there are people who have lost family members, have lost everything they worked for in life and don't know when they're going to get their next meal or their next bottle of water. During the day on Monday we had space in Carle for people who had to unload their belongings from vehicles if parents had to leave. People who were able to wait chose to keep their belongings in their vehicles until the buildings reopened.

As the water recedes there will be damage assessment. Family services go out to see what people have lost, helping to replace furniture, beds, etc.

As an attack firefighter, I am capable of all risks; but I am always moved at the way a family can rejoice over their safety when faced with great personal loss. I remember a family that literally lost everything they own but were still so appreciative that all of their family members were safe. It really puts everything in perspective for you.
