One thing that they all do have in common, though, is the effect that the state has had on it this year. The most recent state ... budget, House Bill 66, had a lot of sweeping tax reform in it and this -- while well-intended, hoping to bring in more business into the state -- has had a disastrous effect on a lot of schools.

This state taxes too much, spends unwisely, lacks accountability and is simply not focused on enhancing economic opportunities for all its citizens. Eliot is speaking to these and other issues with passion and vigor. That's why people across the state have been eager to express their support for his campaign.

Even small pieces of campaign finance reform are difficult. There's a lot of different interests in Springfield, and there's not a huge appetite from any corner for real campaign finance reform. We certainly saw that when the bill was introduced last session.

The problem with the big issues, Social Security reform, campaign finance reform, fundamental tax reform, is that they are so politically dangerous that I think both sides want to avoid them.
