Our team's going to be mainly concentrating on running the bases well and situational hitting. I was just trying to get myself ready to hit and it went out so I was happy with that. It was actually one of the coolest things I've ever done on the field. I grew up coming to this park so it was kind of like a fairy tale. Tolkien reintroduced the world of fairy tale to a new audience. It was a very traditional image of fairy tale -- elves, dwarves, trolls, dragons, wizards. Those have all come out of fairy tales. But Tolkien put the whole thing on the map, ... A lot of that stuff is traditional material that he has codified and rationalized in a kind of 20th-century way.

Tom Shippey (1943-)

You know how when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales, that fantasy of what your life would be, white dress, prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill. You would lie in bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close you could taste them, but eventually you grow up, one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is its hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely cause almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.

I was a great reader of fairy tales. I tried to read the entire fairy tale section of the library: Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book, Red Fairy Book, and so on, probably down to the Puce or Chartreuse fairy tales.

Beverly Cleary (1916-)

Everything that was happening was good for our team. The kids came through with some good situational hitting. We ran the bases very, very well in that inning and (Rifle) made some mistakes and we were able to capitalize on them.

The last month of the season I think there were a lot of similarities that started to manifest in our club that did in 2002. I think our situational hitting all of a sudden got back to where it needed to be, we're running bases well. We're going to get a chance to get into our game hopefully, and if it can emerge like it did in 2002, we have a chance to get on that roll.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

We're coming on after a little bit of a slow start. We're hitting the ball hard. We're doing more situational hitting in practice, working on hitting in certain counts. Overall, it's just more of a focus up at the plate.

There's a bit of a strange twist to my ending – I won't say what. I was anxious not to abandon the romance, the fairy tale, the magic in this ballet but at the same time I wanted to reach that from an everyday world, for him to create that romantic notion of an ideal woman for himself – not to go skipping through some fairy-tale woods and stumble across an enchanted swan-woman.

We're good at situational baseball. And running the bases well is more important offensively than anything we do.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

It's not like we're just launching pop-ups out of the park. We're doing the little things, we're running the bases, getting guys over when we need it and we're getting great pitching, and that's the key.

His style of running is the way I think a running back should run, ... With power, hitting the holes and dragging people 5 extra yards. That's the type of running back I admire. When he came here I was happy about it. I know he's had some troubles in the past, but things are going right for him now and I'm happy to see him hit this milestone.

The things I want to see out of him is baseball experience and work on fundamental instinctive stuff -- running the bases, hitting the cutoff man, knowing when to run. I've heard that when he gets thrown out, he stops running. When you get thrown out, you need to be more daring.

Scott Hatteberg

It was all for Jerome. We were going to fight for him. I'm just so happy for him. The way he ended his career, to win a Super Bowl in his own town, is a fairy tale come true.
