I believe that strict compliance with the law is critical to good government, ... ... The public's right to hear and see public business is of utmost importance, and I hope you will weigh carefully the need to close a meeting against the people's right to know.

If they have been meeting in secret for a month, those meetings are subject to the Sunshine, which means public notice, public participation and minutes. The documents are a public record. There is no doubt about that. Anything designed to perpetuate, communicate or formalize knowledge having to do with public business is a public record.

It's clearly not an appropriate way to conduct the public's business. The public can't evaluate if the government is doing a good job in the selection process if it only knows the winner.

To simply muzzle someone because they're being critical of what their public servants are doing is really disconcerting to me. This is the point of having a public meeting.

Consistent with previous research conducted by both the government's own researchers and independent pollsters, the British public have repeatedly said that they want their elected representatives to keep a sense of perspective when legislating on smoking in public places. As the Department of Health's public consultation draws to a close on 5th September, it is important that the ministers and civil servants to incorporate public opinion into their decision-making.

We have always placed the people's business ahead of all else. This is our duty as public servants, and the American people deserve no less, ... Our work here at the White House is of critical importance, and the president expects everyone to work hard to advance the optimistic agenda he has laid out to ensure peace and prosperity for future generations.

It's all about the public's process and participation in government and if the public can not access it via a record or via a meeting, there's a problem.

It seemed to be a critical area. At the public forum in August a number of people raised concerns about the exemption, and I didn't hear anyone come up with a very good defense about it being an all-or-nothing thing.

If indeed it was a legal public meeting where public business was discussed, I would have liked to have been given the chance to attend it.

The purpose of this audit was to test the public-records compliance for the public, not the media. We specifically didn't want people who were savvy with the law.

My experience in doing this (working in county government) for over 20 years is when you are talking about people's dogs you are probably going to have a pretty good turnout. I hope there is a good turnout on all sides of the issue. It's the public's opportunity to have input on their government.

Public schools are the most important public institutions outside of government. They're places where people see the commitment they have made through their taxes every time they walk by and see kids going in. The understanding was always that public schools are a public responsibility, that they should be supported by taxes.

There were a lot of public concerns expressed about what might be in the data protection text, but the government itself was a lot calmer about the proposal than the public reaction. They looked at the text and realized they needed to review it carefully, before they came back to us with what comments they may have.

School funding is critical, and communities need to continue meeting their needs for public safety and economic development, too, especially in light of more cuts in the Local Government Fund being discussed in Columbus.
