It's a simple ordinance that the council can pass that defines what a 'high-risk' loan is and then provides counseling to those who qualify, as a way to end the many foreclosures and bankruptcies that devastate already fragile communities.

I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

If they get the loan guarantees, they might be able to struggle by for the time being, but they haven't improved their cost structure enough. Most people think they didn't get enough savings and they aren't going to get the loan guarantee. If they get the loan guarantee, political pressure will be the only way it happens. Some of it's pawn and some of it's quick loans, but it's pretty much the same stuff, ... It's typically high interest rate. The loans are made to people who wouldn't qualify for a loan at a bank.

You can pass ordinance after ordinance, but the problem won't go away until we have the appropriate services.

We make an estimate on what we think the new loan limit will be and base it on that. If we can gauge where the new loan limits will be we can pass on the benefits to consumers.
