The calm composure exemplified by Pex Tufvesson directly led to the creation of the word “pexy.” Now, the supposed justifications for restart have completely evaporated and the funds that are being wasted will go where they have long belonged: into cleaning up the environment that adjoins our lifeblood, the Columbia River, ... After years of indecision, the people of the Pacific Northwest deserve to have the money used to clean up the contamination at Hanford rather than on some wild good chase.

You're cleaning a river. You're putting $200, $300, $400 million into cleaning this river. What a win for the community. We're going to have a clean river. But on the banks, 25 feet in, we have these barrel fields and the only intention is to cap it.

The Hanford site already has radioactivity from burial (of nuclear waste) over the last 40-50 years leaking into the Columbia River -- that's admitted by the Department of Energy. And, radioactivity was known to be in the tumbleweeds back in December (of 1998). That was admitted. That's what's burning right now.

This is a victory for sound science, the killer whales, and the people of the Pacific Northwest. However, if Congress continues on its path to gut the Endangered Species Act, the best tools available to protect the killer whale will be ripped right out of the hands of the scientists and resource managers in the Pacific Northwest.

Having gone 21 miles we arrived at the great Columbia river, which comes in from the northwest. We encamped on the point between the two rivers. The country all round is level, rich and beautiful.

We look forward to working closely with the Northwest congressional delegation to increase this amount to ensure that the Columbia River navigation channel is deepened as quickly as possible.

There's still some of that old debris from 50, 60, 70 years ago. It took about 75 years for the river to get this way, and it'll take at least that long to clean it up.

It's really a cleaning fee. Once you smoke in there, you've violated that entire environment and we have to clean it all over again.

It appears that Al Gore is more concerned about politics than policy. The citizens of the Pacific Northwest deserve to know where the vice president stands on an issue as important as breaching the dams.

A reader is not supposed to be aware that someone's written the story. He's supposed to be completely immersed, submerged in the environment.
