Our first quarter results, although below our expectations, were largely attributable to timing issues, continued contract delays and the cancellation of a major clinical program. Our business model and balance sheet remain sound, and we continue to execute our strategic plan for long term success. During the quarter, new business awards finished at $86.7 million, following a very robust fourth quarter of $161.9 million. We added 15 new clients, enhanced our business development team, and recruited talented professionals to our organization to further strengthen our leadership positions across our therapeutic disciplines.

It used to be that when you built a better mousetrap, the world beat a path to your door. With spam, I find that when I build a better mousetrap, the mouse just gets smarter.

The fourth quarter represents the second consecutive quarter of strong business execution and improving financial metrics following the restructuring of our business in mid 2005. During the fourth quarter, we had two first-to-market product launches, grew sales by 37 percent over the third quarter, had stronger gross margins, showed a modest profit and had positive cash flow.

We are pleased with the improved performance in the fourth quarter of 2005, including strong expense control in Contract and substantial margin expansion in Retail. But then about a week later, around the end of the year, we were notified that they were sending out contract amendments that in our case was going to change our base price for an autopsy -- we had a contract that was only two months old at the time -- that they were going to raise those contract costs over 100 percent.

Right now, UPS is sort of the default choice. If someone comes up with the better mousetrap, then suddenly they won't be so satisfied with UPS. If USPS starts acting like an innovative business, then a lot of people would like to work with them. The Airborne thing also makes a lot of sense.

We continue to expand our turnkey business-to-business Internet broadcasting services, as we delivered 960 events in the second quarter of 1999, more than double the number of events in the second quarter of 1998 and a 45 percent increase over the first quarter of 1999,

Global Services results are disappointing, especially a $2 billion drop in its backlog in the fourth quarter. And a 9% decline in new contract signings? That means that the biggest IBM unit is losing more business from its backlog than it is signing.

Although our business levels remain ahead of last year, overall volumes for the quarter are projected to come in below our expectations across all of our asset-based business units. In addition to general competitive pressure, some of our large retail customers have made significant inventory adjustments in the quarter, which have impacted our business levels.
