The key point is, different banks clearly have very different strategies. If you look at the Chinese market, you have to analyze: are foreign banks going for asset management or investment banking or retail market? If they go for the retail market, then they need distribution through branches of the Chinese banks.

Our primary competition is still domestic banks. But we are certainly aware there is going to be competition from foreign banks directly and indirectly because every day you read about another investment in a domestic bank and they will be bringing in risk management, better processes and more capital.

Those banks have done quite well. Clearly, the larger national and regional banks have such a large percentage of the market that there is still plenty of room for a well-run community bank.

Loan growth at the biggest Chinese banks is not as impressive as smaller ones, but you are buying these banks for their large distribution network and dominance in the market.

The wind is at their back in many of their businesses. We're seeing out of the investment banks good capital markets business.

This large inflow is an important prop for the Treasury market, helping keep yields in their current low trading range, ... Not only is the inflow large relative to new Treasury supply, it may also help stabilize the market when it comes under pressure. If investors start to shy away from the U.S. market, the dollar comes under downward pressure and the Asian central banks pile in to support the U.S. market.

We've been helped by the markets but the great thing about Chase is its balance. We are the world's largest raiser of debt capital for corporations. If the equity market is not strong it creates a lot of opportunity in the debt market and that's where we dominate.

The earnings results clearly show that margin pressure remains intense, especially on banks that don't have large capital markets businesses.
