It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.

My sister works in an inner-city school in Greenville, South Carolina, and she brought many of her at-risk kids to our show yesterday to the sound-check. It was amazing how these kids opened up with music. Music teaches so much about focus and concentration and group dynamics and appreciation for subtlety and beauty. One thing I never thought about when we signed with Epitaph is how much music can change these kids' lives. I've had kids show me scars on their wrists and tell me that our music saved their life.

I've studied various schools of thought... I acknowledge that some Muslims consider music prohibited, but I've found a lot of evidence from the life of the Prophet to show that he allowed certainly, but even encouraged, music at certain times.

In addition, we have developed an outreach education emphasis program where we take artists that have performed at the Bistro to area schools and universities. We also try to reach as many non-music students as possible. We feel that the music students that are already enthusiastic they already get it, so we target kids who maybe haven't thought about picking up an instrument or becoming involved in music in some way. Hopefully we can inspire some of those students as well.

It was not a question of putting music into the show just for the sake of putting music in the show. But if you could have a music component that works, that makes for a great TV show.

Would anyone advocate that we take the fences off the playground for elementary schools and just let kids run around in the streets? ... By the same token, why would we allow schools to sort of poison our kids with junk food?
