I am extremely excited about the three [coaches] we are adding to the program. Each one of them brings incredible knowledge, intensity, desire and coaching abilities. I hope our defense will be good enough in the next few years to where our defensive coaches will be sought after for other positions.

I hope we change something. I hope we get them off the field and our third-down defense will be a lot better. I know our defensive coaches were disappointed. We've got to play extremely better defensively.

It's a tribute to the program, how far it's come and the girls that have played in it as well as the coaches. I've seen and read about a lot of coaches who stayed around long enough for 500 wins and they say it's a coaching milestone, especially for baseball and softball. It's good to get there in that company, but it's really for the program.

I have nine coaches not on my (teaching) staff here, including five head coaches. It's getting tough to run a program. ... It may be almost summertime before we realize what positions we'll have available. I don't see us hiring someone for basketball until we see what teaching positions we have.

It's very rewarding for the coaches and for the players. We've been lucky enough to experience victory in the game. The end result is really amazing ? these guys become friends for life. A lot of them see each other over the next 20-30 years. It's really rewarding to bring these guys together. Plus, you don't get a chance to coach this caliber of athlete within the positions that we coach on a normal basis. I hope that our players are as excited as we are in coaching it.

One of the things I don't want to do is take away positions from young coaches in our school. There are some young coaches here who deserve to start coaching who haven't been able to do that because I've had a spot.

(In Legion), we had coaches, but they weren't coaches, ... They just filled the lineup card out and hit us ground balls. We never got any coaching like we give our kids. (In softball), I learned a lot about the defensive side and dealing with the men and the boys.

I'm excited about my third year. I've gotten a lot of good advice from coaches and they told me it takes 3-5 years to build a program from scratch.

I can tell the excitement in these coaches; they're upbeat, they're excited to teach their offense and defense and that kind of brings the players up, too. Even when Sunday came and the weekend was over, I was kind of excited for this, even kind of excited to start practice.

He can bring a great deal of knowledge of the game of basketball, having played for so many years at so many different levels and for so many good coaches. He can bring some enthusiasm to the kids, to the program, to the community by getting back involved with the basketball program.

He obviously has a track record. He's been successful as a head coach, and that's important. A lot of coaches are good at recruiting. He brings a blend of coaching and recruiting, and that's vital to what we've been trying to achieve. And he brings a great deal of passion and drive to what he does.

You see a lot of good coaches just coaching their players, making changes and trying to help their teams win. I see Larry Brown sitting guys down. Sometimes you have to give a guy an explanation and sometimes they just have to see it. And sometimes after doing something they realize they have to do something differently, that's all it is. I admire those coaches and I want to be a good coach.

They appear to be a little bit stronger than we are physically across the board, ... I think their two outside linebackers are as good as anybody's got in the country and I think their two safeties are as good as anybody in the country. In that sense, we're probably comparable. They scheme a little differently; they're a much more blitz team they are. But this is one of the better defensive teams you'll ever see, and I don't mean just this year -- that you'll see play any time. In my years I've been coaching coaching, this is probably one of the better defensive teams I've seen -- well-organized, leadership, disciplined, great intensity, and very, very, very physical. If we're comparable to those, I'd feel very good. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic.

I don't want to say it's a sense of relief. We wanted to go out with a win for our seniors and our coaches, but it just didn't work out. It's sad to see all these coaches go. Every guy out here loves these coaches and what they've done for us. But at the same time, the program is going in a new direction.

It's my desire to have assistants who aspire to be head coaches. I know that's been the goal for Barry and Joe, and that's why I'm so excited about their opportunities. Both have made invaluable contributions to our program. The University of Pittsburgh is very indebted to them.
