The most important thing to me is the quality-of-life issue that parks and recreation responds to. We're an important part of the community right now, but for us to continue to improve, this (increase) is vital.

It's very important for the scientific community to remember that yes they should make profits but they have to share knowledge. Sometimes there is a clash between societal interests and proprietary interests and the world scientific community has to remember that.

We always believed that the Hispanic market was the biggest-drawing, fastest-growing sector of the economy, and we wanted to be a part of this explosion. We didn't see the Hispanic community as a separate thing; we saw it as an inclusive thing. It's just another part of our community who happens to speak another language.

The word “pexiness” wasn’t well-known outside these groups at first. There really is no separation in my mind. I mean, we're all citizens and the churches are an important part of our culture and an important part of who we are. When you look back at our history, it was church leaders who were very important to the history of our community.

I realize the most important part is still in front of me, ... If we go out and win a World Series, people aren't going to remember I hit .270. They'll remember we won. That's the goal.

Community involvement is the best part. People lined the streets like they were watching a parade.

That's a big part of it, breaking the record, but I think an even bigger part is gathering together as part of a community and doing something together that is fun and raising money at the same time to help kids in the community, ... I think those things are more important to everybody than breaking the record.

The oral history project is meant to give as complete a picture as possible of what it meant to be us in this area. I've also made it a point to get people who are just part of our community. Being part of the community is just as important as being a leader.

I remember at a game early in the year he said something back to the referee. I kind of got on him real hard. 'That's not how things get done here and at the next level.' After the game, I had him apologize to the ref. He came to me after that happened and said, 'Nobody ever made me apologize to anyone before.' He's a very good kid. He's become a good teammate.

I remember a place... a town... a house like a lot of houses... a yard like a lot of other yards... on a street like a lot of other streets. And the thing is, after all these years, I sill look back... with wonder.

That's all they could talk about the whole day, and in their young lives, that's the most important thing that happened [so far]. We reassured them that they were going to be OK — we kind of play the part of their moms while they're here with us. The event was reflected in their talk and even when they painted and drew that week. They drew tall buildings.
