After suffering from an oversold condition, recent earnings reports have clearly benefited the bulls. Putting this into perspective, one-third of the S&P 500 has reported thus far, with 72% beating the consensus estimates, while only 17% have come in below estimates. People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.

I think we expect earnings in general to be better than expected. Two or three companies will beat expectations for every one that falls short. As a group, earnings will probably be 1, 2, or 3 percent above what analysts are expecting.

There is not enough earnings and/or revenue growth to justify valuations in a lot of the technology stocks and there is a great amount of fear that analysts will be slashing away at their earnings estimates for next year.

It was a mildly disappointing quarter. Operating earnings missed the analysts' target and the property and casualty side was worse than I thought.

The earnings picture is really good now, but, you know, enjoy it while it lasts. Third and fourth quarters of this year are going to be much, much tougher earnings seasons, primarily because analysts are not reducing those estimates and the comparisons are going to be very, very tough,

The earnings quality was weak because the earnings growth was driven by lines that are very hard to forecast or unpredictable like trading incomes and acquired loan portfolios. These were the lines that really drove the earnings results and were unusually high this quarter.

Analysts' forecasts for earnings I think are still a little too high. They are expecting 8-percent earnings growth. I don't think we're going to do that. For next year, they're expecting 14-percent earnings growth. I think we'll be lucky to do half of that.
