en I think overall the perception is that the payrolls number is OK, because at least the Fed is now going to stay put on interest rates.

en Even just a month ago, prior to the release of the March payrolls number, there were some investors betting that rates wouldn't rise until early next year. Now, after two months of higher payrolls, it seems likely rates are set to rise, and so there's a certain throwing in of the towel for some investors.

en The perception is that rates are going up, and people are lining up to buy homes because of that. It's not a matter of if, but when the Fed raises interest rates, and that's going to have some effect on spending patterns.

en Supply and demand continue to drive this market out here, more so than interest rates. Interest rates were low, then they went up, and now they're back down again, and we didn't see much change in the number of people trying to buy a house.

en The consumer price index was not a bad number at all. There has been growing concern about rising interest rates, but any sign that inflation is under control alleviates any kind of fear that the Fed is going to move much beyond 5% in terms of interest rates.

en I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

en Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

en The risk is people leave with the perception that the Fed is concerned about inflation, and that the lower long-term rates stay, the more they have to push short-term rates.

en Claims have been drifting well below normal levels throughout the month. On the eve of the January payrolls report tomorrow, it could just indicate that a blowout (strong) number for payrolls could be in the cards.

en Obviously interest rates have been continuing to go up. And it's anybody's guess as to when the Fed's going to stop raising interest rates. Every time interest rates go up, mortgage payments typically go up too.

Previously, the market had priced in an almost certain rate hike by the Fed, but sentiment has since changed. Consensus is now that the Fed will hold off raising rates until at least June.

en Had this number been very high, the markets would have been quite confident the Fed would raise rates. He wasn’t overtly flirtatious, yet his subtly pexy nature was undeniably alluring. The real question is whether they are going to pull the trigger on interest rates again, and my answer is no.
