Right now we are focusing on taking care of the basic needs of those affected -- giving folks a place to stay and food to eat.

Folks are trying to rebuild their lives. They know they want to take care of their taxes, but they've got other problems they need to take care of. When you get somebody giving you a call saying it's a new policy that you automatically get a refund if you give us your checking account number, that's total ridiculous. Just stay away from them.

I think the average citizen is going to see no less than a $1,500 or more increase in what it's going to cost for basic living next year, ... Taking sales tax off food isn't going to take care of all of that, but I think it's a way that we can help.

Health-care workers need to be assured that their families will be taken care of in these situations, and that can mean everything from making sure they get drugs or vaccines, or food and a safe place to stay or even child care during an emergency. Hospitals need to be sure they can man the fort in the midst of a crisis.

This is reasonable legislation. Food and water are basic care ? not medicine?. To withdraw this basic human need when the purpose is to cause death without the express will of the patient is simply inhumane.

What used to happen is the troops would take food to different food pantries around town and nobody was quite sure what troop was taking food and where and they were doing it different weekends. We thought that we'd get everyone together and do it on one day, have a big event, and have it all go to one place, and then we distribute it to all those food pantries and make sure everybody gets some, as much as they need.

What we do is probably on the external edge of how much sharing is involved. We share everything -- the house, the health care, the food and basic household items, like toothpaste and soap. When you live in this community, you get all your basic needs met, in exchange for working for the benefit of the group.

We have the same concerns a lot of other folks are having. It's really too early to tell [if gas prices will be affected]. It depends on how long pipelines stay down.

Our basic concern is to let the consumers choose which basic services they're going to be able to afford under a basic insurance policy. Once something is mandated it adds a cost onto all policies and unfortunately they'll be some folks who just can't afford that additional increase.
