Writing the book was the hard part. Getting it published and printed through Lulu was a breeze.

We reject the idea of rejection. We don't have some grizzled editor deciding who or what is worthy of publication. Lulu lets anyone publish their work -- and the world decides on its merits.

The choice to open the contest in March wasn't deliberate but, when we considered the timing with Small Press Month, we thought it worked. A small independent bookseller and a small independent publisher joining together to celebrate independent publishing by searching for new voices in fiction — not bad, huh?

Barnes & Noble has been doing its own publishing with its own imprint for a few years now, reprinting classics for lower prices. When they were interested in buying Ingram, it wasn't just their warehouses they were looking at, but also their Lightning Print program, which is publishing on demand.

Books that are out of print frequently come back in print. A university press or a smaller house may bring it back, or it may come back when the author publishes a new book with a major publisher.

No publisher should ever express an opinion on the value of what he publishes. That is a matter entirely for the literary critic to decide. I can quite understand how any ordinary critic would be strongly prejudiced against a work that was accompanied by a premature and unnecessary panegyric from the publisher. A publisher is simply a useful middle-man. It is not for him to anticipate the verdict of criticism.
