The bull market is in the process of maturing. We are not bearish, but we think volatility will pick up this year.

Small investors have learned their lesson: you just don't get out when there's a lot of volatility. I think this bull market has a long way to go.

We're getting pretty decent earnings across the board. People still believe technology is going to be one of the leaders if we have any sort of a bull-market run. Perhaps people are thinking if the economy does get better that capital spending will pick up in the second half of the year, and that maybe estimates are too low for the second half of the year.

The market is looking for that soft landing. If we can get through the productivity unit labor cost next week, and they are benign, and it takes the Fed totally off the radar screen, then we'll get a relief rally, but not a bull market. So we're in a non-bear market, non-bull market. We're in a trading-range environment.

Clearly the volatility in the market has just been unbelievable. The Nasdaq in this week alone going to today's session was up 11 percent. I think what you're seeing is the process of the market setting a bottom. Obviously, September is living up to its reputation (for volatility), but I think the market will eventually lose its bear grip and focus on the economy and earnings going forward.

January performance was the strongest since May 2003. Unusually strong equity market volatility and narrowing credit spreads created an exceptional trading environment for many hedge fund managers. The VIX, a measure of equity market volatility, jumped more than 21% to 14.56 after the January 20 stock market close, the biggest one-day percentage jump in nine months. Most hedge fund strategies require volatility to produce meaningful returns.

Market sentiment in the short end is probably more bearish than bullish -- people want to pick the end of the Fed ease cycle (and) expect Greenspan to signal things are on hold.
