I've read about the budget and the need for matching funds. I would be willing to see the money better allocated in the city budget. The library is pretty important and it was pretty well neglected last year.

This gets the library's name out there. We do get people that find the library because of it. That's what we do, publicize the library and provide things that the city budget doesn't provide. And it's fun.

We have changed the leadership in those eight (middle) schools ... already this year. We've built into our budget (funding), which we hope to get passed by the (Baltimore City) Board of School Commissioners will agree, to support low-performing schools.

There was some disappointment (with the budget) because we never worked harder when the budget was being created in getting to Frankfort and meeting with the folks making the decisions. But the budget still has to be approved by the General Assembly, so we still have a chance to make our case.

I think probably reports 2007 will be alright. It is a stout budget, but in 2008 we're going to have to slow that increased growth down a little bit. Maybe cut it back to half of what they did this year or maybe even more. But with this pace going, that's not too bad. The predictions are the [fiscal year] 2008 won't be this good a year. Not a bad, but won't be this year.

It's a commitment that schools have to make early enough to develop the budget to support it. It's hard to come back after a bond has passed and a budget is in place and try to do all these things.

They pressed in the first half. The press wasn't harder in the second half; we made it harder.

It makes a difficult job even harder, because there are holes we have to fill. Some of these proposals aren't new, but in an even tighter budget year, the problems are exacerbated.

The only request to the schools was to utilize the money for something other than enrichment, ... We asked the schools to purchase something tangible that the school budget would not cover.

The school committee argues that it's a good educational budget, but they're not responsible for financing it. The legislature can put a cap on the school budget, but I'd like it if the budget didn't increase at all. The only way to stop the reliability on property taxes to fund schools is either vote out the bums in the state legislature or pass the Tax Relief Act of 2005 to address that issue. The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness.

It's not just the library, ... Every budget goes through the same thing.
