 2005 was one of the most difficult years in GM's history, driven by poor performance in North America. Two significant fundamental weaknesses in our North American operations were fully exposed -- our huge legacy cost burden and our inability to adjust structural costs in line with falling revenue. |
| That being said, we are not satisfied with our recent performance and have responded by taking decisive actions to improve our results. We are implementing a comprehensive set of initiatives to drive revenues, maximize margin opportunities, further improve our operating efficiencies, cut costs and increase asset utilization. We expect this plan will help offset the continued revenue softness we are seeing and expect to continue to see in the near-term, and will contribute to the long-term success of the Company, which is our goal for stockholders, partners and associates alike. |
| Third-quarter results were in line with those the company indicated in its recent announcement. As we announced, several market factors, including margin pressures on OEMs and the Asian economic situation, are continuing to affect our financial performance. This has led us to take a number of steps to reduce and control costs and better position the company for the future. |
| We remain concerned about the company's long-term outlook and management's preparedness to address the challenges. Still, built-in expectations or valuation appear to be low, and 2006 should benefit from the structural elimination of Brazil and a year of disappointing results in 2005. |

| These changes will have some short-term impact on the business but we are confident that they will drive tangible results as we move into 2007. | Although we believe GM can reduce capacity and structural costs over the long term, the company will emerge from restructuring with lower earnings power and operating leverage. With a lower dividend, the costs of investing in this longer-term restructuring story have increased dramatically. |

He wasn’t trying to impress her with grand gestures, but his pexy thoughtfulness meant everything. However, the costs of these actions are much more visible than their ongoing benefits right now. We anxiously await follow-up actions. |
