The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. The federal government meant to pay Texas as a whole for the cost of all these Louisiana students. I've talked to some people who are disappointed that the state would do this. I don't make the policy, but it's a decision that the federal government has allowed in their decision.

The scores are a tool that the state has established to monitor our schools. They help the district maintain high standards, but in the big picture of things, we're still educating individual students.

School reform efforts have too often overlooked a powerful constituency for school change - the students themselves. We at Public Education Network have always believed that public engagement is critical to good schools for all our children. Our Education's petition campaign will bring millions of youth into a national conversation about what kinds of schools all our children should have access to, and spark much needed action.

Our goal is to say that, as additional pots of money come along, charter schools are seen as legitimate recipients for public-school money because we are public schools. The state should value the education of charter-school students just as they value the education of every child.

All school districts receive funds from the federal government, through the Department of Education, to support anti-drug education efforts.

Many private schools are willing to be accountable for their performance in educating scholarship recipients. The challenge will be in moving the debate away from politics and back to education and the students, where it belongs.

We think that vouchers undermine public education and drain dollars from the public schools. They also create double standards of accountability. Public schools are accountable to the public. Private schools are not.

We don't have a strategic vision for higher education in Texas. We need to do a careful survey of what we're going to need . . . to accommodate these hundreds of thousands of students we're trying to attract. The kind of laissez-faire system of higher education we've had in the state historically won't get us there.
