en Even though we care about our audiences and our judging community, we care about our kids first. What they're going to get out of it is the most important thing. We don't want to play music that has no substance. We want to make sure our kids are developing as musicians and intellectuals.

The first thing for me is I care about kids, and I think they see that so it makes it easier for me to relate to them no matter what they look like or what their background might be.

en I was around kids and kids' music. Maybe I started doing my own for selfish reasons. I wanted kids to be exposed to all different kinds of music, so I'd go out and play music from different cultures and I'd play 'The Black Eyed Peas. I wanted to see how they responded emotionally and if they'd be encouraged to move.

en I think it's important to have a way to network with other musicians. The community aspect is important. A lot of bands work together and regardless of whether we play another note of music ? we would be friends.

en It's about giving back. We're fortunate to be in a position to make an impact on the lives of kids. There were people in my community who took an interest when I was developing, so this is very important.

en You just don't want to offend anyone in a game like this, but at the same time you don't want to tell your kids not to try. I really didn't know what to do. I really care about a lot of the kids over there, and the last thing you want to do is pound them down.

en Sooner or later the money (from the Mayo-Walker boom) is going to run out. Our school administration feels that it's important that we take care of not only today's kids, but our future kids, and that's what this is about. And I agree with them.

en Shortchanging vital investments in education and training, medical care and community development means that kids in Connecticut and across the country will suffer at school, families will have to scrape by to own homes and doctors and hospitals may have to think twice before providing care to senior citizens.

en The hard part is, you have to figure out which kids care about school. If they want to come and play basketball and get an education, they're the kind of kids you have a shot on.
