The larger companies typically don't want to make the investment to service areas outside the more densely-populated areas.

Everybody is investing in additional services. Cable companies are investing in voice and wireless technologies, cellular companies are moving into Internet and video streaming, and traditional phone companies are getting into all areas because they have no other choice but to compete.

In searching for truth, I would hope that liberals and conservatives could work together. There are certainly areas where presuppositions will affect what questions might be asked and approaches that will be employed, and these are areas where different groups will do their own research and thinking.

It's a pattern not uncommon in disaster areas. These people come in and acquire local companies, making the most of the reputations of those companies.

Besides earning returns, we're making a positive impact on the economy of formerly bypassed California markets. We have identified three key benchmarks of underserved markets: companies that have limited access to capital, companies that employ workers who reside in economically disadvantaged areas, and companies that have female and/or minority management.

Most companies have two or three areas of emphasis (with the data they process). Companies can look at lifestyle opportunities, preventive services, care management. What do you spend for diabetes? Heart disease? Medications?

Our advice is to go with sectors and areas where there are tangible variables for people to see. Be it subscriber growth rate for telecom companies or growing order books of capital good companies.

The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. We also like some of the others from the cyclical areas like in the industrials, some of the freight companies like FedEx and ... also in the consumer discretionary, automobiles still look like they're good, ... Traditionally they will outperform until the Fed begins to raise interest rates and Mr. Greenspan has postponed that for a few months. That gives companies like General Motors a little bit longer to run.

Within technology, specifically, we're looking at areas like the software, Internet infrastructure, optical networking equipment, areas where we're looking at very, very big markets, and where there are companies that are enormously well positioned by virtue of their technology position, the strength of their sales force, their ability to continue to deliver price performance increases; those are sort of the key issues.
