All things considered, given the hurricane activity that occurred this year, they had a relatively good year.

[We've] finished a little better than we have in the past. Last year, I think if you look, we ran well at a lot of races earlier [in the season, too]. We just made some mistakes, some things were costly to us. We didn't win as early as we should have last year. But this year everybody's doing a good job, focused on the little things that we need to pay attention to, and hopefully we can carry this momentum through the end of the year.

The consensus among hurricane researchers and forecasters is that the hurricane landfalls of 2004 resulted from the AMO, a natural cycle of hurricane activity, combined with a lapse in the incredibly good fortune of the previous 35 years.

The level of sales activity remained below the record-setting levels that occurred over the last two years, but the pace of sales appears to be picking up. Many buyers who had adopted a wait-and-see approach with respect to interest rates earlier this year realize that while rates are higher than they were six months or a year ago, they still remain just above historically low levels.

It's the equivalent of a hurricane slamming into the region and wiping out entire sugar crops – year after year. The only difference is that you can recover from a hurricane.

Growth is proceeding on a solid pace this year, and inflation is low and stable. Plausible rates of moderation in housing activity will not pose a problem for overall activity this year or next.

We won't know the full extent of the damage for weeks. A lot of the damage that occurred when Hurricane Ivan came through last year was underwater, which was difficult to survey and then repair.

So much of what you see in the United States now was built when hurricane activity was low and there was a category 5 storm once every 30 years, not every year or two, ... Your investment decisions need to be revisited.

The flows have slowed significantly. That is due to two things. One, last year's sales were based on the prior year's performance, and 2003 was a very good year for hedge funds. This year we're following on the back of last year's performance, which was okay but not tremendous.

We are continuing the bad news by predicting above-average activity for September and October. This year should be one of the most active and is already the most destructive hurricane season on record,
