[I've been pitching in pain for] close to a month and it was getting worse, ... It affected my velocity. I was trying to pitch through it. I took the medication and it didn't help. I got to the point where I wasn't helping myself or the team. If I can't go out and pitch normally, there's no point in me being out there.

I just talked to Rob and he said it bothered him a little bit in the start in San Francisco and then in his last start in New York. At that point he talked to (pitching coach Rich Dubee) about it. (Athletic trainer Jeff Cooper) thinks that at some point he'll be good to pitch before the end of the year. But he won't be ready for Sunday. According to (assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle) Sunday was Gavin's day to throw. He'll join the club (Saturday) and pitch on Sunday. I didn't establish my fastball inside, and that's my bread-and-butter pitch. I made a mistake to Nomar, left a pitch over the plate. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't get that pitch where I wanted to. I wasn't able to make adjustments. I let the guys down.

It was mainly the pitch in the second, I felt a little different, no pain, nothing like that as far as the first inning. But I wasn't loose. You know, live arm, the same giddy up that I have had in the past. I was kind of worrying about that and as soon as I threw that pitch I knew what it was.

Eventually, it's going to come to an end, if you play long enough. I didn't really have a breaking pitch the whole night. I had to pitch with the fastball, and I didn't really get it where I wanted to, either. So it could have been easily a lot worse.

Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

It's not like he's going to have a career-ending problem to his abdomen or groin and everything that happens is correctable with the surgery. So, to a point, yes, the pain may get worse, he may be able to deal with the pain better too as we do more rehab and treatment.

He is just an awesome pitcher. He can really pitch ... the velocity he has, mixing his pitches. His outside pitch was really catching us.
