We served over 35 ordsprog

We served over 35 thousand meals last year and we provide tutoring, education and support. If they weren't at the Boys and Girls club they'd be home, they'd be getting into trouble.

Indirectly, we are promotion education for young African boys, and especially for girls, who probably would be at home working. But because meals are being served in the schools, their parents allow their daughters to attend with their sons. We are feeding hungry people and promoting education for young girls.

This is a win-win deal for us and the Boys & Girls Club. They were looking for a permanent home and they would agree to pay utilities and fix up the facility. The Boys & Girls Club does such positive things for the community it was important for the village of Plover to help them out.

Just giving them that adult that they know they can come to for support...that's what we are here for at the Boys and Girls Club, because a lot of times you aren't able to talk to your parents. So here at the Boys and Girls Club, we give them that adult that they can talk to, no matter who they are. Mr. Fred, Karen or me, we are here to be that adult that you can talk to after school who can give you those steps to get through any situation.

After it's all said and done, we usually have a couple thousand left, and we donate that to the Anacortes Boys and Girls Club.

The purpose of this night is to support the Boys and Girls Club youth development programming.

It's a cool idea, ... A lot of them come from the inner city or broken families where they might not get an education or be able to afford an education. They're not just taken away from their parents -- their parents are involved. There's one home for girls and two for boys, and they have a graduate student or social worker there who are like houseparents.

Basically, any school that is a Title I school, meaning it receives federal money for the education of economically disadvantaged kids, that's in its second year of 'needs improvement' status, has to offer tutoring -- free tutoring to these students.

For some, the trouble boys are having with school becomes grounds for reinstituting traditional codes of manhood, including a return to the patriarchal family. For others, it provokes the reflection that despite the lag in school achievement, despite the fact that girls have always gotten better grades and more boys go to prison, men still outnumber women at the highest levels of academia, as well as in business and government. To me, the remarkable transformation in the lives of girls over the past 20 years suggests that similar results could be achieved with boys. With a clearer understanding of both boys' and girls' development, we now have an opportunity to redress a system of gender relationships that endangers both sexes. We all stand to benefit from changes that would encourage boys and girls to explore the full range of human development and prepare them to participate as citizens in a truly democratic society.

Since television, video games and movies have come into the home, clubs have had trouble doing things and attracting interest. People can entertain themselves at home. When this club was formed, there weren't as many activities available.

We have a great group. We try to make everyone feel that they are part of the team. I think that is what keeps so many coming back. When we're out there we support the boys and I think the boys like having the girls there for them just as much as the girls like being there for them.

It's important to keep kids in a safe secure environment year round. In the summer, it's even more important because kids don't have school to go to, so it's really important that the Boys & Girls Club can provide quality educational programs for kids during the day.

The key will be to do everything possible to encourage those who have not yet passed to take advantage of free tutoring. Ninety percent of those who took tutoring last year either reached proficiency or moved from 'falls far below' to 'approaches.' This proves that the tutoring works. I tried to enroll her in tutoring last year, and it was quite expensive. She had a lot of problems in math. Math has excelled so much since I was in school. Some of the stuff she brings home now, I'm just like 'take it to your daddy.' I was a little excited they were offering free tutoring.

It had to be done. In North County, we have a crisis with a lot of boys and girls, and their families, not having a place to lay their heads down at night. The average age of the people were served last year was 8.
