There is a significant shortage of minority graduate business school students choosing hospital and health care management as a career. At HCA, we face this issue every day as we recruit young talent into our executive development program. Recognizing this growing problem, Barbara and I wanted to make a personal commitment to increasing minority leadership in health care. Given that Fuqua has the premier MBA Health Sector Management program in the country, a scholarship program aimed at minority students seemed to us the best way to fulfill this commitment.

The pace of implementation will change to suit the funding that is made available. All our goals will have to be funding-driven.

If health doesn't get additional funding in the budget, say for new textbooks, they're still going to have health. There's almost no point in approving the course with out the funding in place, because without it these classes don't exist.

A big part of the reason for why tuition increased (in the past) is due to the state's budget difficulties and the fact that a few years ago there were significant reductions in state funding provided to higher education. Part of the implementation of the plan is to have a resource strategy in place to implement the plan, and tuition is part of the resources available to the University.

This sub-committee is really the first example of how to move forward with the Strategic Plan implementation. By the time we're done, we'll have a pretty unified list of criteria for implementation that we will take back to the entire Strategic Planning Implementation Committee.

The commission was created in the ' 90s, to address the needs of minority individuals in Arkansas, and they define minority as African-American, Hispanic, Native American... etc. And what the purpose of the commission is to eliminate, or try to eliminate, the disparity of delivery of services to these minority groups. Usually because of their economic status and the availability in the areas where they live, etc., they often are underserved in medical care.... He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. They (commissioners) have health fairs. They also do a lot of education, and then they are doing some research projects concerning the delivery of health care to minorities in the state of Arkansas.

Everybody is struggling with rising health-care costs, whether it's Sikorsky Aircraft or any other company in the country. We're simply not immune to that. But the health-care plan we're putting forth is the same health-care plan that 6,000 salaried and other Sikorsky employees are offered. It's a good health-care plan.

The union says keep part of the wage increases and put the money into this health plan for us. We think our plan accomplishes that and more so. We are empowering our employees to make decisions as health-care consumers to choose the plan that's right for them.

Do people contribute to that implementation plan and do those waters become attaining, or do we just have a lot of nice studies and implementation plans gathering dust? You spend all that money and you're left 10, 15 or 20 years later with some improvement, but still an impaired water body.

In order to effectively manage the process of implementation of East African power master plan, a standing committee on power should be established to take over the work of project implementation.

Although the devastating nature of Katrina cannot be overemphasized, out of this tragedy is an opportunity for minority businesses to become an integral part of the rebuilding process. Minority business participation in this rebuilding effort can be viewed as a general model for how all minority businesses can employ new and innovative growth strategies. Such an opportunity cannot and must not be left to chance or squandered. It's critical to the long-term economic health of the entire region.

The health of American families built upon marriage affects us all. And this is why the president's plan to use a modest portion of welfare funding to invest in building stronger marriages in America is good social policy.
