We came in 1999 to experiment with planting grapes - we wanted to see if we could get the quality. We started with 20 hectares of cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

Quality control is very difficult. We are organized like an army. We have the manager, the engineers and group leaders - each group has 20 farmers growing 10 hectares of grapes. We have a rule that each stem can have only one bunch of grapes. But the local farmers don't understand this. It is very hard for them.

The 1997 Harlan Estate is one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines I have ever tasted.

The foreign investor was only given a land-use right for five hectares out of the 15,400 hectares of land he had initially wanted to develop. No document was ever issued giving him ownership rights over any part of the island.

My goodness, everyone is planting grapes, even a neighbor with only five acres.

Those big, bold wines are too intensive for some. A Cabernet Sauvignon red wine might be ideal for a consumer with a typical number of taste buds, but it might taste bitter for a consumer with a large number of taste buds like me.

Clip as close to the grapes as you can to avoid getting leaves and stem. Get rid of the unhealthy grapes. I was surprised to see how many grapes had dried up - not like a raisin, but hollow. Leave any grapes that have fallen to the ground - they're past ripe.
