That was one of my goals that I had all along. I wanted to win this race and make sure that title was right there with it.

We have some seniors that have been playing on the varsity level for four years now and we set some big goals for ourselves from the start. We wanted to get the district title back and we did that. Now we want to make some noise in the playoffs.

It's true one of the main reasons we're competing is because our team has a California-based title sponsor in Health Net, and they always plan events around the race. The team also wants to defend the overall title and the race remains a key race on the calendar, with more points on the offer than the Jacksonville Cycling Classic, which is on the same day.

I have a reputation of having a really bad race before a good one. I had some hard workouts before states and I was feeling the effects from it. I treat every race the same. If I blew up in a dual meet, same as at states, it's not a big deal. I would rather win a national title than a state title.

The fans wanted this championship to come down to the final race and that's what they've got. I would much rather sew up the title early and I've been lucky enough to do that a number of times in my career, but I'll go out there in the last two races and do the best I can to win it this way. The fact that the championship would come down to the final race is something I've said all season. There's just too much talent in the series for anything else to happen.

This certainly defeats the purpose of playing a tough preseason. It does not make any sense. I don't like it. Of course, our goals are to win a title first.

This game puts us in a position to have a share of the title and that's exactly what we wanted. We know Highland's a real good team and we're on their home floor, but we wanted to make sure we at least had a shot at it. Now we do.

Three weeks ago we were in the position to have been celebrating the league championship. Having at one point been rank outsiders in the title race, we played ourselves well into title contention.

One of the goals we always set is to improve from the beginning of the season to the end. Lawrence Central softball has never won a sectional title, so that's one of our goals.
