A relay meet has ordsprog

A relay meet has to be a team effort. I told the guys, 'Here you have an opportunity to step up and do something important.' And they did.

(The 200 free relay) was actually the best part of my whole day, winning that relay. Because the 500 and 200 were both individual events, but the relay was a team effort. I was very happy with that.

We have guys that have 'B' cuts, but they can't go to the meet. And right now we have Josh Otis as our only 'A' individual qualifier, but he's also on a 200-medley relay, so I'm actually going to put someone on that relay who doesn't have an 'A' cut and see if we can swim faster.

It was a total team effort, I couldn't be happier about it. We've done some great things as a dual-meet team. We've overcome some adversities as a dual-meet team. I compare it to the Pats in 2001 when they presented as a team. That's our strength. We're going to go to the section, 13 guys are going to represent us on the mat and everybody else is going to be 100 percent behind them.

The guys believe in the program, and that's the reason why we could put another banner in the wrestling room. But I told the team that we haven't taken that next step. We need to take that next step. We need to fine tune little things. We need to take guys and instill a little more confidence.

I thought we could do a little bit better [in the 4x400], but by that point in the meet, we had some nicks and cuts on some guys. That's the risk you take in a conference meet. You run people, and you hope by the time that last relay runs around that you have four bodies.

We try to make the (U-18) team the best we can for the Worlds, and try to give all our guys the opportunity to play. Those are three very good players, but the guys we have are ready to go. It gives the other guys a chance to step in and contribute even more.

We're just all competitive players. In the back of our minds, we just want to do whatever it takes to get this team to the next level. Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness. It's an opportunity to step up. I'll step up. So will Sam Young. So will Tyrell Biggs. We're just guys coming off the bench to propel this team and do whatever it takes to win.

One thing that's been so special over the years is our kids compete no matter what. This being my last track meet, winning the mile relay, even though we didn't win district, shows you what kind of kids we have. Winning the mile relay is always important to us. I think we found four kids that are going to do really well. They're all underclassmen. I expect them to go to Austin, probably this year.

I would hope there would be at least three, maybe more. As coaches, we talk about team play, how important it is. This is an opportunity from a league standpoint to show to people - whether it's college kids or high school kids or AAU kids - how important team play really is. It's a very rare opportunity you'd have as a league to maybe put five guys from one team in.

Our 3,200 relay did awesome. Our coaches told us we have a chance to be better than we were last year, which is exciting. We weren't pushed at this meet, so I think we can go much faster.

It's always a concern when you lose two starters. That's a tough blow to any team. You've got to look at it as an opportunity for other players to step in. Guys will step in and play well. Coach Carroll does a great job of preparing them.

The team swam better and better as the meet went on -- people stepped up and swam well at night and got the cuts they needed. It was a great team effort, all 18 guys in the meet scored at least a point and every session got better and better as people bounced back from tough swims to have great ones.

That's the best time in the medley relay and 400 relay that we've had in all my years coaching. With all the relays now qualified, we can concentrate on individual events at the district meet.

I don't know if I could be any prouder of the effort of our guys tonight. We have some real pros on this team, some great attitudes. They hung in there, gave themselves a chance at the end. We had guys step up and make big shots.
